How to Choose a Floor Plan

Finding the Ideal Apartment Layout

When you’re looking to move to a new Louisville apartment, one of the first things you need to figure out is what type of floor plan will best suit your needs. How many bedrooms? Where are they located? Is there enough space for your furniture?

Make a list of features that matter to you (and, if applicable, to your roommate(s) or family members) so you can zero-in on a few floor plans to consider.

What Fits Your Budget?

First and foremost, knowing what your budget can accommodate will give you a starting point to begin your search. When figuring out your rent budget, also keep in mind which utilities you’ll have to pay and which amenities are included (an on-site fitness center means you don’t have to pay for a gym membership).

How Much Room Does Your Household Need?

Figuring out the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you need seems like it should be straightforward, but there are a number of considerations involved in that decision. You may want an additional bedroom for a home office. If you’re moving in with a roommate, a private bathroom for each person might make sense. Also, think about your possible future plans. If you upgrade from a full-size bed to a queen bed, would it fit in your bedroom?

Does the Layout Work?

Beyond just the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, it’s important to know if the layout is right for your life. Is there enough room for all household members to have space without getting in each other's way? Is the main living space far enough from the bedrooms to keep noise from interfering with an early bedtime? Would you prefer a pass-through kitchen for good traffic flow? Try to imagine how daily life would look for you with each floor plan you consider.

Are There Work Considerations?

With so many jobs moving to long-term work-from-home, the need for office space could be an important consideration when choosing a floor plan. Consider whether a dining nook could serve as your office, or if you need a separate space with a door. If two people in your household work on different schedules, does the floor plan you’ve chosen allow for each to get enough rest, as well as prepare for their workday without disturbing anyone? Sometimes, a little extra space can go a long way in sustaining household harmony.
